When in history is there a country is in desperate need of a leader, and he/she leaves and the country fails?

It would have to be a very small country. A queen or king. The son or daughter don't really want to rule, so they slip away. It has happen a few times. Someone married a movie star a few years ago and gave up their throne. In the movies Princess's Diaries is a good example.
