Power lock broke or is it a safey feature?

I purchased a 05 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT without an owners manual. The drivers side sliding door lock does not operate by powerlocks like all the other doors do. I'm only able to lock and unlock it manually. I'm wondering if I need to get this fixed or if this is a simple child safety lock feature. Does anyone out there know?
